Desert running

Posted by cavewomanrunner on June 15, 2011

So I have been wanting to post these pictures of desert trails I had the awesome opportunity to run several months back. Some of you may recognize the Tucson, AZ landscape. The rocky trail was well worth finding and my Bikila Vibrams were amazing.

The trail

There was a decent incline that was also worth the effort for the view it offered.

The view

The only thing that would have made running this trail (as I was able to do at least twice during the business trip) even better would be having my three pups at my side. Ah well. Good thing I’ve moved to another desert where the trails are right in our backyard!

I’m Crying

Posted by cavewomanrunner on August 4, 2009

I tried to run for the first time in a week today. I only got a few steps in (wearing my old running shoes) and the pain was so intense in my right foot I had to stop. I wanted to cry. I can’t stand this not being able to run!

For the very first time I missed a race. I did not make it to the 8 miler cross country race on Saturday. I have been babying my foot all week, not running or doing any strenuous activities on it. Yet just walking hurts. I have a noticeable limp and the only thing that seems to help is wearing heels. I’m not sure why this is, although I did read something about wearing at least 1 inch heels takes to the pressure off some of the tendons that must flex when you are walking “normally” from the heel to the ball of the foot.

Reading about foot/ankle injuries online doesn’t make me at all inclined to pay lots of money for a doctor, xrays, and an MRI just for them to tell me they don’t know what it is. I believe I know what it is – the tendons on the top of my foot are inflamed and not recovering quickly.

The good news is I don’t think it is a stress fracture. That’s why I think the smart thing to do is to lay off the running so I don’t make it a fracture. I’ve been icing it at night when it’s most swollen and painful and this seems to help some. The common recovery period seems to be 4-6 weeks (or until the pain subsides). I sure hope it’s less than that, as I don’t think I can take much more of not running.

Like I said in my previous post, I don’t think it’s from running in the Vibrams, except for the fact that I may have done too much, too fast. After 5-6 runs in the shoes (including hills that can be bad for the tendons), I felt comfortable in the shoes and kept running in them. I should have backed off just a bit, especially right before a race. Now I need to take the downtime and recover.

Arg! I want to run! I hate this!!! 😦
